Michael Sims - Challenge 2
Prior to becoming a PhD student, Michael had graduated in 2017 with an integrated Masters in Geology from the University of Southampton and spent some time working as a field engineer at the wellsite. In 2019 Michael returned to academia to commence a PhD in the fields of petroleum systems modelling and organic geochemistry.
Currently Michael's research interests supports challenge 2 and focuses on Rock-Eval and hydrous pyrolysis, alongside biomarker ID in understanding the environment of deposition of lower Carboniferous mudstones. The outcomes of this work will aid in understanding the source rock potential for integration into petroleum system models allowing resource evaluation. The work is further supported through funding and training by the NERC Centre for Doctoral Training in Oil and Gas.
